Support Us

Few places in America regularly bring together leaders of different race, class, profession and ideology to find shared purpose and renew their collective strength. Our objective is to strengthen movements for change by connecting and reweaving leaders from multiple disciplines, helping them to explore differences, to imagine our country whole again, and to find shared voice and narrative.

This work was started on a hillside in Vermont and is now operating nationwide. In 2009 Whole Communities led workshops in Ontario, Colorado, Maine, Pennsylvania, North Carolina, California, Michigan, British Columbia and New Jersey, New Hampshire, Maryland, and New York City.

In our first year (2003), we gave 23 fellowships to support environmental and social change. Our fellowship program now extends to well over 800 alumni leaders representing 450 land, environmental, food security and social change organizations across the country.

This year we are endeavoring to raise $750,000 to make this work possible. Our funding comes from more than 300 individuals, dozens of local, regional and national foundations, and our alumni who hire us to conduct advanced leadership trainings to support their ongoing whole communities work.

Our Fall 2009 Campaign

The wooden bowl exemplifies so much about our work – generosity, nourishing one another with what we have, reciprocity, simplicity, beauty, the courage to create something of meaning and purpose. Our staff is carving traditional wooden prayer bowls from Knoll Farm butternut for those who are able to give $1,000 or more to our fall 2009/winter 2010 campaign.

Our Renewable Energy Campaign in Memory of Alan B. Day

A deep bow of gratitude to everyone who gave to help us renovate an old barn into our new offices and in the process to convert our operation to renewable energy. We now heat our buildings with our own wood, and power our lights and computers with our solar array. Read more.
