Icelandic Sheep

Spring and Summer Icelandic Sheep Sale

Our flock of 50 registered Icelandic sheep is outgrowing our farm. We had 30 lambs this spring, and only one needed help in delivery. We also had one bottle baby from a new mother who had some trouble bonding with her babies on a snowy Easter Day. The biggest reason we love Icelandics is for their mothering instinct and easy lambing.

We’re offering some of our strongest breedstock at good prices this spring in order to reduce our flock by about half. If you are looking for a new ram or for some additional foundation ewes, please consider us and call for details.

Ram Lambs for Sale: Born in April and growing fast! Photos below

KFM 63T and 64T - White ram lamb twins. These boys are from one of my favorite foundation ewes, Lucky. She always throws twins and has a calm friendly temperament. Her ram lamb that I sold as breed stock last year threw all twins and triplets. Their father was my pick of the ram lambs last year, a white twin who matured very early named Otto, KFM 46S. Both lambs are large and vigorous; I will probably keep one myself. $300 each. SOLD

KFM 61T - White ram lamb twin, very strong build, from my foundation ewe Lady. Lady also has a great temperament and throws twins. Ram was a black twin named Wells, DWY 10S. $300. SOLD

KFM 67T - White twin, from one of my oldest and most reliable foundation ewes. He's gorgeous looking with a very long and leggy body and long classic face. I'd keep this ram if I didn't already have several close to his bloodlines. I tend to keep this ewes' rams for breeding because she reliably throws strong sires with a great body type. This one will carry moorit and probably spotting. $350. SOLD

KFM 71S - White ram lamb single, quite possibly the single largest lamb I've ever weighed at birth at almost 11 pounds. His mother, Dutchess, is black and one of the largest ewes I have. She is five, and this was her first single. The sire is Otto. He'll carry moorit. $350. SOLD

KFM 69S - Black ram lamb twin from Ruby, a moorit badgerface. This one is another lovely ram lamb, not as large as 71S but a great build and growing very vigorously. He might carry the badger pattern. $250. SOLD

KFM 75S – moorit ram lamb twin from Martha, a moorit ewe from our oldest foundation ewe, Baba. Comes from a great line with great temperaments. $250

KFM 81S – moorit/gray ram lamb twin with white spot on forehead. This guy is a beauty, with lots of color and pattern. Both parents have amazing soft, long fleece. Out of Russett, an amazing mother and big stocky ewe, and Otto. $350

KFM 83S – a black badgerface ram lamb twin out of one of our favorite ewes. Stocky and beautiful. $300. SOLD

KFM 84S – a black/gray ram lamb twin. His mother also carries this pattern and has a gorgeous, soft, blue-silver fleece with black tips. Sire is Otto, our pick of the litter last year. $300

About our Flock

Over the years we have been breeding for size and for parasite resistance, and we are just beginning to see the positive results in our flock. We raise grass-fed meat as well as wool and breed stock, so these traits are particularly important to us. We intensively graze our animals in small paddocks to improve the health of the soil and give them the maximum nutrition, moving them as often as once a day through the summer and fall. In the fall and winter they are fed hay and kelp inside a shelter and are able to move around through the snow and forage for grass whenever possible. They lamb outdoors in the late March – early May.

Photograph of an Icelandic Sheep

Very few Icelandic sheep have been exported from Iceland since Viking settlers brought the breed there 900 years ago, making Icelandic sheep one of the purest breeds in the world. Renowned for their exceptional fleece (which is marketed in this country as Lopi yarn), Icelandics are an excellent all-around breed that is becoming increasingly popular around the US.

Icelandics range in color from white to blue-gray to deep brown to black, spotted and mouflon. Other desirable traits include easy births, multiple births common, excellent mothers, highly alert and curious dispositions, fast growth, delicious meat, naturally docked tails, and very hardy. We have found that they are excellent for bringing back the fertility of land, as they love to forage and thrive even on rough pastures.

Our Ewe Flock

All of our ewes are purebred Icelandic and are registered with the Canadian Sheep Breeder's Association. All of our animals have horns.

We sell pregnant ewes in late fall/early winter, and well-grown ewe and ram lambs at the end of the summer. We sell only the rams that we consider to have the most potential as breed stock. Also ask us about buying a mother and baby together.

This list includes ewes that lambed in spring 2007. Those with prices are for sale; prices negotiable based on when you buy.
